The U.S. government officially shut down at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday thanks to a deadlocked Senate. The federal government shutdown is already sending ripples across the country. Many that rely on services from the government are wondering how those services will be impacted.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – During a government shutdown, as many as four million federal employees, including some service members, will not get a paycheck. Some federal workers deemed essential, like air traffic controllers and certain military members, are told to work anyways. However, the members of congress, will still get paid.
The federal government has shut down after Congress failed to reach a deal before the deadline. It’s the first shutdown since 2019. Tuesday evening, the Senate rejected not one, but two competing funding bills—paving the way for the shutdown.
Time is running out in Washington tonight, with just hours left to prevent a government shutdown. If lawmakers can’t strike a deal before midnight, much of the federal government could grind to a halt and thousands of workers across the country would be affected.
